In the early 1960’s, a marketing firm was hired to create an ad campaign to sell a Japanese pedometer ahead of the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. Because the Japanese character for 10,000 resembles a person walking, that figure was selected.
And over 60 years later, 10,000 steps is still viewed as the “magic number”.
Isn’t that crazy??!!
Many people are not able to walk 10,000 steps daily for a number of reasons.
You may be one of those folks. I don’t walk 10,000 steps every day either.
Maybe you’re not convinced that walking less than 10,000 steps has any value. But consider this:
In August 2024, a new report was published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology, stating that walking 3,967 steps each day, slightly less than two miles, can lower the risk of dying from any cause.
That’s good news.
Rather than feel discouraged about not getting to the magic number, what is possible for your daily walking?
Some walking is better than no walking and more walking (within reason) is better than some.
Start where you’re at and increase if possible.
Now, let’s go…
